HOW TO IDENTIFY SILVER AT HOME
Not sure if it’s solid silver or just silver-coloured? Use this quick checklist. If you’re unsure, take a clear photo of the hallmark and send it to us.
Step 1 — Zoom in on the hallmark
Use your phone camera (or a magnifying glass) and check for tiny stamps on the item.
Where to look: inside rings, bracelet clasps, chain tags, backs of cutlery handles, underneath trophies/cups, edges/backs of frames.
Step 2 — Look for these “YES” marks
- 925 / .925 / S925 = Sterling silver (92.5%)
- 999 = Fine silver (99.9%)
- 958 = Britannia silver (UK higher standard)
- 800 / 835 / 900 = Continental/European silver
- Lion Passant = UK sterling standard
Step 3 — Watch out for plated silver
- EP / EPNS = Electroplated (not solid silver)
- A1 = Plated grade mark (not solid silver)
- Electroplate / Silver Plate / Plated = not solid silver
Step 4 — Common “house clearance” silver finds
People often discover silver in cutlery sets, trophies, tankards, napkin rings, christening mugs, sugar tongs, salvers/trays, old medals and presentation pieces.
Note: Many items like candlesticks, knife handles, frames and brushes can be weighted (thin silver shell over filler).
Not sure? Bring it in and we’ll test & weigh it in front of you — with a transparent breakdown.
